And it’s Danica FTW! First for Women in IndyCar

by Hilary on April 20th, 2008

I couldn’t be happier. Not only has Danica Patrick secured her first IndyCar win (the first for ANY woman) she did so because she saved on gas. :P

Using a fuel saving strategy created by her team manager, Kyle Moyer, Patrick was able to pitstop for the last time at Lap 148 (out of 200). She wasn’t the only racer using a similar method to win, but she was able to execute a great plan all the way to the finish line. [SpeedTV.com]

“With five laps to go, I was saving fuel,” [Helio] Castroneves said. “When Danica passed me, I realized she was the leader. She did a great job, passed me fair and square and that shows you how competitive our series is.” [AP]

Will this quell her critics? Much of the aftermath has been a celebration, but …

The fact is that other top racers were stretching their fuel and they didn’t make it. Ms. Patrick did and that’s why - for today at least - she’s the winner. The first female winner. Anyone who’s stretching to scrutinize that needs to focus on the facts, and not on the headlights.

Not only is Danica a gutsy and great race driver but she’s quite hot too.

Yeah, but how long did it take her to get a win? She stinks, flat out, stinks. And it was most likely a setup anyway, due to the hoopla surrounding the merging of the two racing series…they needed some good press.

But most everyone that knows about it will only care because she’s a female and she won a race. So if that’s your only knowledge of the sport, then congratulations. You got your faux win at last.

Michelle, I’m open to my own conspiracy theories, so if you want to expand on the hows/whys, I would love to read them.
